According to Axios, President Donald Trump will welcome Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday evening. This gathering occurs just two days after a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the Pentagon in its ongoing dispute with the artificial intelligence firm.
Based in San Francisco, Anthropic is the creator of Claude, one of the nation’s premier AI chatbots. Sunday’s event marks the initial one-on-one encounter between the two individuals.
Pentagon Blacklist Upheld on Friday
The Pentagon designated Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” in March, barring the firm from participating in defense contracts.
The military branch explained that Claude’s built-in safety boundaries, combined with an unsettled contract dispute, rendered the system potentially unreliable for operations. Anthropic had previously declined to permit Claude to support lethal autonomous weaponry or the mass surveillance of U.S. citizens.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit maintained this designation on Friday via a 2-1 decision. The dissenting magistrate asserted that existing law does not categorize “a contractor’s honest and upfront enforcement of restrictions” as valid justification for a blacklist.
A prior ruling from District Judge Rita Lin went in the opposite direction, with the judge stating that the government’s measures were intended “to make a public example” of the company.
Is the Feud Over?
Axios characterized the Sunday dinner as an indicator of improving relations following a tumultuous year.
Trump extended the personal invitation after a scheduling conflict prevented Amodei from attending Thursday’s state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Forbes reported that Apple’s Tim Cook, Elon Musk, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang were seated at the primary table during that event.
Political hostility persists, however. A memo circulated by a Trump political adviser recently portrayed Amodei as a prominent proponent of AI “doomerism,” which is the conviction that artificial intelligence poses a threat to humanity. Additionally, Trump has targeted Amodei on Truth Social regarding his advocacy for decelerating AI advancement.
This friction coincides with Anthropic’s preparations for an initial public offering. The business has shifted its targeted stock market debut to November, with discussions centering on valuations approaching $2 trillion.
Tuesday’s AI Summit Comes Next
On Tuesday, Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are scheduled to host prominent AI executives at the White House, though the complete attendee roster has not been made public.
A White House official articulated the administration’s stance to Axios:
“President Trump has been clear: America will lead the world in Super Intelligence, while protecting American consumers.”
Neither party has disclosed the topics Trump and Amodei will address tonight, nor whether the Pentagon’s classification will be discussed.
