President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are holding their second summit of the year in Washington this week. This encounter coincides with a sudden resurgence of bullish sentiment on Wall Street.

The discussions seek to stabilize a fragile trade agreement as complications arise from artificial intelligence, tariffs, and Iran sanctions. Financial markets are monitoring the summit closely for further positive indicators to support the emerging market rally.

    Markets React

On Monday, Wall Street experienced a rally driven by artificial intelligence-associated equities leading the advance prior to the summit.

The S&P 500 rose 1.5% to achieve its strongest performance since August 4, while the Nasdaq Composite surged 2.3% to secure its initial record close since June.

Significant double-digit percentage increases were recorded by Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, and Qualcomm.

Conversely, crude oil values dropped more than 4% and Treasury yields decreased. Earlier market sessions had seen both figures driven upward by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Last week, the Federal Reserve enacted its initial interest rate hike in three years. Observers identified ongoing energy costs as a primary driver of inflation risk.

What’s Happened Between China and US Before?

Set up a year ago in Busan, South Korea, the current trade truce is slated to conclude on November 10, exactly one week after the US election. Observers anticipate that the current discussions will yield a modest extension instead of a major breakthrough.

Despite the de-escalation measures introduced last year, tariff levels imposed by both nations stay high.

Data from the Penn Wharton Budget Model indicates that the effective US tariff rate on products from China remains close to 23%, representing some of the strictest penalties applied to any primary trading nation.

The Busan agreement involved China halting its export restrictions on rare earth elements and purchasing American agricultural items, while the US administration reduced certain tariffs in response.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence that the truce would likely persist, noting advancements regarding a prospective reciprocal reduction of tariffs on non-essential products.

Artificial intelligence has developed into a primary point of contention during the negotiations. Highlighting a push for unrestricted AI infrastructure expansion, Trump asserted via Truth Social that the United States currently leads the global artificial intelligence competition.

“WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so.”

Bessent noted that bilateral talks involved discussions about establishing a communication channel to report incidents tied to artificial intelligence.

    What to Watch

The discussions are also overshadowed by sanctions against Iran. Measures taken by Washington against Tehran’s financial backers have drawn attention to China, which functions as Iran’s primary trading partner.

According to Bessent, the sanctions initiative was addressed by the two administrations over the weekend, though no official punitive measures against Beijing have been declared.

Analysts at Bank of America Global Research view a complete one-year extension of the truce as the most probable outcome, while also noting the possibility that China might acquire additional Boeing aircraft.

However, the same financial analysts suggest that substantial compromises concerning semiconductor availability or export oversight remain unlikely.

Because the trade truce expires shortly after the US election, the results of this week carry significant importance for determining year-end market trajectories for energy commodities and AI-focused stocks.
