Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has put forward a proposal to implement daily dividends across the STRF, STRC, STRK, and STRD tickers. The firm aims to provide preferred shareholders with cash income on every calendar day, representing an unusual model within the US equities market.
Dividends represent the funds distributed by a company to investors holding its shares. Under the proposed structure from MicroStrategy, this income would accumulate daily—incorporating weekends and holidays—with distributions executed on the following business day.
The overall financial return remains unaffected by this update. The adjustment focuses entirely on the frequency with which investors obtain their payouts.
Note: Preferred stock is a special type of company share designed mainly to pay investors regular income. Regular stock, like MSTR, gives investors more exposure to the company’s gains and losses, so its price can move much more.
STRC is Becoming an Income Product, Not a Bitcoin Stock
At present, STRC yields a 12% annual dividend based on its $100 stated value. Put simply, an investor owning a single $100 share would collect approximately $12 annually under the existing framework.
The introduction of daily dividends would not raise that total payout. Instead, the mechanism distributes the exact same earnings through much smaller, more frequent increments.
This functions similarly to receiving a portion of a monthly salary on each workday rather than gathering one lump sum at month’s end.
This modification could enhance the appeal of STRC for investors prioritizing steady income. Furthermore, Strategy indicates the shift could bolster market liquidity and price consistency.
There are Risks
The framework of STRC differs significantly from MSTR, which serves as the primary company stock tracking Bitcoin price action.
MSTR experiences substantial price fluctuations because market participants primarily view it as a leveraged play on Bitcoin. Conversely, STRC centers on yield generation and Strategy’s efforts to maintain its trading value near $100.
While daily payouts might accentuate this distinction, they cannot eliminate underlying risks.
Should Bitcoin experience a severe downturn and spark anxiety regarding Strategy’s financial health, STRC can still trade well below the $100 mark. A precedent occurred in June when Bitcoin slipped under $60,000, pulling STRC down to $75.
Additionally, the continuation of the dividend relies on Strategy maintaining sufficient liquidity to fulfill the payments.
What It Means for MSTR Investors
The ramifications for MSTR stockholders are more indirect.
Preferred shareholders maintain seniority over common MSTR holders within Strategy’s corporate capital stack, requiring full payout before common equity holders can access any distributions.
Consequently, the divergence between the two financial instruments is becoming more pronounced.
MSTR preserves its status as a high-volatility, Bitcoin-correlated trading asset. STRC increasingly assumes the role of Strategy’s income-focused offering, characterized by limited upside potential, consistent cash disbursements, and a framework engineered to preserve relative price stability.
