This week marked the debut of Barça Fan Lab by FC Barcelona, a digital platform built on Cardano that enables supporters to earn verifiable credentials through active engagement.
Created in collaboration with technology partner Andamio, the initiative seeks to reshape how millions of supporters engage with the team.
What Barça Fan Lab Actually Offers Fans
Supporters log into the platform using BarçaID, the organization’s current digital identity framework. Upon signing in, a personal Cardano wallet is automatically generated and linked to that profile, where earned credentials are kept.
The initiative spans four distinct categories:
- One focuses on club history and values.
- Another covers sustainability and inclusion themes.
- A third bridges physical fan communities into digital participation.
- The fourth explores Web3 apps like collectibles and loyalty systems, though the club stressed these remain experimental rather than confirmed features.
Significantly, the venture received financial backing from Catalyst Fund 13, the community grant initiative of Cardano. This funding background clarifies why the club opted for this particular blockchain network over competitors.
Why Did FC Barcelona Choose Cardano for This Project?
Collaborations between sports organizations and cryptocurrency ventures have grown commonplace, yielding varied outcomes across the industry. Fan tokens associated with prominent clubs have occasionally faced challenges regarding low liquidity and limited practical utility after the initial excitement dissipates.
FC Barcelona is also no stranger to this arena. Back in 2025, Barça Media introduced Barça.Pass, an alternative Web3 wallet created alongside Futureverse that engaged a user base exceeding 11 million existing BarçaID accounts.
At the time of writing, Cardano’s native asset, ADA, changed hands near $0.2526, registering a 1% increase over the preceding 24 hours. The cryptocurrency sits approximately 92% beneath its record peak of $3.09, which occurred on September 1, 2021.
Whether Barça Fan Lab fosters substantial supporter participation or simply introduces yet another infrequently used digital wallet will likely hinge on adoption metrics that the club has not yet revealed.
